During a rally in Austin, Texas on May 13, 2024, Nicole Shanahan, the Vice Presidential candidate for Independent presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr., hinted at a potential shift in their campaign strategy. Shanahan revealed in an online interview that they are contemplating either continuing their independent run to secure over 5% of the popular vote and establish a third-party presence for future elections, or possibly aligning with Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Shanahan expressed concerns about the risk of inadvertently aiding a Kamala Harris and Tim Walz presidency by drawing votes away from Trump. She also mentioned the possibility of stepping down and supporting Trump, explaining the decision to their supporters. Shanahan acknowledged the difficulty of this choice.
When asked about her political future, Shanahan did not rule out a gubernatorial run in California if their campaign ends. She emphasized her desire to remain active in California politics.
Polls indicate that Harris might have a stronger chance against Trump in swing states if Kennedy remains in the race. Shanahan clarified that their campaign’s goal was to win and make significant changes, not to act as a spoiler.
Kennedy, in a tweet, reiterated his commitment to his long-standing goals, including addressing chronic diseases, reducing military conflicts, eliminating corporate influence in government, and protecting free speech.
Democratic Party spokeswoman Lis Smith criticized Shanahan, accusing her of not being a serious candidate and suggesting that the Kennedy-Shanahan campaign was always intended to benefit Trump. This interview comes just before Harris is set to accept the Democratic nomination with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Kennedy, who previously sought the Democratic nomination, has faced legal challenges regarding his ballot eligibility in several states. Despite these hurdles, his campaign claims to have secured ballot access in all 50 states.
